Maintaining Good Posture

In this article, we explain what good posture is, why it's a good habit to have and how to maintain it. Good posture is easy to achieve, but it takes a lot of attention and practice to maintain.

What is Good Posture?

Posture is defined as the position in which someone holds their body when standing or sitting. Good posture is your body's position when all of the muscles are relaxed, straightened and well balanced.

Good neck postures mean neck muscles do not tighten up to prevent forward head position or neck pain. Good posture has a great effect on back and neck pain, muscle tightness and neck function.

Improving Your Back Posture

The ideal standing posture is keeping your body correctly aligned. Your neck should be straight, and shoulders parallel with your hips.

  • -Keep your feet hip distance apart.
  • -Distribute weight evenly.
  • -Avoid tilting your head to one side.
  • -Keep legs straight and knees relaxed.
  • -Pull in Abdomen.

Poor posture is very common for people sat at a computer or at an office job. When sat at a desk:

  • -Take short, regular breaks away from the desk area.
  • -Keep both feet flat on the floor.
  • -Adjust the top of the computer monitor to be at eye level.
  • -Use a chair with a suitable backrest and armrests.
  • -Relax your shoulders and keep forearms parallel to the floor.

Health Consequences of Bad Back Posture

Bad posture can cause muscle tightness, decreased circulation and nerve compression. As a result of this, poor neck positioning can cause regular headaches and migraines.

Back and neck pain are closely related as a result of uneven muscle tension, neck functionality and body posture. Bad posture can also affect the respiratory system because it becomes difficult to breathe when the spine is bent or twisted. Studies show that digestion is also influenced by posture - a slouched back interferes with your gastrointestinal system negatively.

Why Having Good Posture is Beneficial

There are several reasons to having a good back posture and maintaining it. For one, those with bad neck posture tend to look older than they really are: they have less attractive facial features and appear sad, tired, or bored.

Good posture is also a characteristic of confident individuals - people who walk upright and have a broad back generally project an aura of self-worth and poise.

As well as appearing more confident, standing with your shoulders back and head up is proven to improve your mood and make you overall more optimistic.

In terms of neck functionality and back mobility, good posture is one of the best solutions. There are also positive side effects such as better digestion, increased blood flow to the brain and a boost in energy levels.
