There are a lot of injuries that can restrict your ability to get around, often forcing you to stay inside. Being stuck at home can be tough and can often have a very negative affect on your mood. But not to worry! We’ve come up with this nifty blog that gives you a few ideas of things to do while stuck inside, so you can say goodbye to boredom and hello to fun!
Play some Games
Whether it’s board games, card games or video games, games are a great way to spend time with family and friends and have some fun together. Board games such as Monopoly, Cluedo and the Game of Life are ideal for getting the family together. Card games like Blackjack and Solitaire are short, so they can be good when you need to pass five or ten minutes of time. Video games are also a great way to spend time with your friends.
Read a Book
Now is as good a time as any to sink your teeth into a brand-new book series. Is there a title you’ve wanted to check out but could never find the time for? When now you have all the tie in the world! Books can help you to immerse yourself into a story, allowing you to leave your boredom. You could use this as an opportunity to try out a genre you’ve never read before. For example, if you usually read fantasy novels, why not try out a detective story?
Reading books also has a lot of physiological benefits. For example, reading can help to improve your mental stimulation, helping to slow down or even prevent illnesses like Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Reading can also help to reduce stress, as well improve your focus and vocabulary.
Do some Tiding-up
Why not use all of this extra time to get some much-needed cleaning done? Get some family or friends to help you and get the house looking spotless! You could sort through all of your belongings and get rid of what you’re not using, or you could reorganise your stuff into categorised boxes. Having a tidy home space can greatly improve your mood and can make it much easier to find things! Who knows, you may even find something you thought you’d lost forever!
Catch up with Friends
Want to spend time with your friends but can’t go out with them? Why not get together online? With so many online communication services now available, like Skype, Discord, Facetime and more, it’s easier than ever to get a hold of someone. Why not get a group of friends together on a group call. Or perhaps invite them over to your house. Simply chatting with your friends can help to pass large portions of time. If you need some conversation starters, why not plan a trip out together for when you recover from your injury, or discuss what you think will happen next in your group’s favourite TV show?
When socialising with people, your body produces a chemical called Oxycontin. This chemical is used to maintain and strengthen our social bonds, as well as give us a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
Watch some Television
With the ever-rising popularity of streaming services, there is a huge range of tv shows and box-sets to watch. Most sites offer a wide range of genres, so finding something you’ll enjoy is easier than ever. Comedies like The Office and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are great for giving you a good laugh and making you feel positive and upbeat, and documentaries like Planet Earth can help to stimulate your brain with lots of interesting facts and knowledge. If you can’t find something new to watch, why not re-watch one of your favourite shows? Or, why not get the family together, grab some popcorn and have a movie night?
If you enjoy cooking, why not use this time to experiment with some new recipes? Who knows, you may end up discovering your new favourite meal. Or perhaps you could bake something, like a gigantic cheesecake for the whole family to share! Again, this may be tricky depending on your injury, so don’t hesitate to get some friends and family involved too. If you need some culinary inspiration, here are a few recipes I personally love!
Are you just looking for a way to relax and relieve stress? Why not try some different forms of meditation? There are a variety of different meditation books and podcasts that can teach you effective ways of meditating. There are two common methods of meditation. Concentration Meditation is where you focus on a singular object, whether that is a certain sound or a certain item, you think of nothing else but that. As well as helping you to feel more relaxed, this type of meditation helps to improve your concentration overall. Mindfulness meditation is where you focus on your mind’s wandering thoughts, allowing you to become more aware of how your thoughts change overtime. These meditation tactics utilise a type of brainwave known as the Theta wave. This brainwave can help you increase your memory, intuition, focus and creativity.
Catch-up on some Work
Got any reports or assignments left to do? Now is a great time to catch-up on any work you have left to finish. If you’re on a roll, you could even do some extra work, and get ahead of the game, or take an online course to gain some new skills that might be useful to you later. This one’s not so much fun as it is productive, but getting it done will be a nice weight off your shoulders!
If you need some motivation, try using Mel Robinsons’ 5 second rule. This is a rule which states if you have a goal you want to achieve, countdown from five and do it right away. Otherwise, your brain will kill your motivation and you most likely won’t end up achieving that goal. This is because our brains are wired to prevent us from doing anything challenging or outside of our comfort zone, as it thinks that doing so could put you in danger.
Try Taking a Nap
If all else fails, you could just take a nap! Sometimes, you just need to give yourself a much-needed break and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to get back to it! Taking naps are a great way to reset your brain, they can remove any stress or worry that you may have been experiencing allowing you to come back with a fresh mindset. Naps also help to improve your focus and concentration, as well as your overall mood. Alternatively, if you’d rather not sleep, you could always grab a blanket and pillows and get comfy on the sofa whilst you eat some snacks and relax!
So, there you have it! These are just a few ideas for ways to kill time and have some fun at home, but there are so many more! If you need some more inspiration, why not ask your friends what they like to do at home? Alternatively, you can find our references below:
